A Love Supreme is a four-part suite that Coltrane recorded in a single session on 9 December 1964 with his quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. It is built on modal improvisation, opening with a four-note bass motif from Garrison that Coltrane develops through a long solo, and he chants the same motif through overdubs. In "Psalm" he plays a devotional poem on the saxophone without speaking it. The album is a statement of gratitude and devotion, and Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin recorded a tribute to it, Love Devotion Surrender, in 1973.
