Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! is built around two side-long pieces, "Mladic" and "We Drift like Worried Fire", each close to 20 minutes, with two shorter drone pieces between them. Godspeed You! Black Emperor recorded it in April 2011 at Hotel2Tango in Montreal after reforming in 2010, and the long pieces rework live material the band had played since at least 2003 under the names "Albanian" and "Gamelan". It drops the multi-movement structure of their earlier records and leans on drones, with two drummers, hurdy-gurdy, hammered dulcimer and kemençe among the instruments. The band first released it quietly at a concert in Boston on 1 October 2012.
