Angel Dust is the album where Faith No More dropped funk metal for a wilder mix of styles, with Mike Patton’s first major creative input as singer. Recorded in San Francisco with producer Matt Wallace, it is built from heavy sampling (Simon and Garfunkel, Diamanda Galás, Z’EV, a Shostakovich string quartet played by the Kronos Quartet) alongside country in “RV”, Middle Eastern-flavoured synths in “Smaller and Smaller”, easy-listening in “Everything’s Ruined” and a cheerleader chant recorded for “Be Aggressive”. Patton moves between rap-style vocals, spoken word and operatic singing, and the album closes on an instrumental cover of the “Midnight Cowboy” theme. Deftones, Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park have been cited as inheriting from it.
