Vangelis recorded the score at Nemo Studios in London between December 1981 and April 1982, producing and mixing it himself. He improvised to videotaped scenes in the studio, with the Yamaha CS-80 synthesiser as the most prominent voice, and used Foley-style synthesis to make both on-screen and off-screen sounds. Gamelan, gong, tubular bells and timpani sit alongside the synths, with Demis Roussos and saxophonist Dick Morrissey on Love Theme. The soundtrack was not officially released until 1994, and Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch cited it as an inspiration for Blade Runner 2049.
