Bryter Layter by Nick Drake, album cover

Bryter Layter

Nick Drake · 1970

Joe Boyd produced this at Sound Techniques in London, with John Wood engineering and Robert Kirby arranging strings and brass. Dave Pegg, Dave Mattacks, Richard Thompson and John Cale play on it, and it is the last Drake album to feature other musicians, the next being the solo Pink Moon. Kirby said Drake wanted the arrangements to evoke the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds. It has three instrumental tracks, and release slipped from November 1970 to March 1971 over dissatisfaction with the artwork.
