Confield is the album where Autechre used generative software such as Max as the basis for songs instead of physical synthesisers. Released on Warp in 2001 and produced by Rob Brown and Sean Booth, it largely abandons the ambient melody of their earlier records for chaotic, abstract sound, with melodies taking second place to percussive elements. Beats are repetitive but complex, with conflicting rhythms on "Cfern" and warped drum machines on "Bine". The duo says the system's output is not entirely random and still needs human guidance, and later releases such as Exai kept using generative sequences made in Max.
