The Mars Volta recorded this in 2002 and 2003 at Rick Rubin's studio, The Mansion, after abandoning an earlier set of sessions made with different personnel. Rubin and Omar Rodríguez-López produced, with Flea playing bass on most tracks through a 1964 Fender Precision. Rodríguez-López often doubled a dry guitar part with a heavily effected one, panned hard left and right, and tracked through small Supro and Fender amps. It is a concept album inspired by the life and death of the band's friend Julio Venegas, with SF Sorrow and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway as models.
