Discreet Music by Brian Eno, album cover

Discreet Music

Brian Eno · 1975

Brian Eno recorded the title piece on 9 May 1975 at his own studio. It was originally meant as a background drone for Robert Fripp to play over in concert, and is built from two melodic phrases of different lengths from a synthesiser's digital sequencer, run through a graphic equaliser and echo unit and overlapped across two tape machines. Side two, recorded at Trident Studios with Gavin Bryars conducting the Cockpit Ensemble, is three variations on Pachelbel's Canon in D. Eno builds on Erik Satie's furniture music, and the album points towards Ambient 1: Music for Airports.
