Can recorded this between December 1971 and June 1972 at Inner Space Studio in Weilerswist, their first album made there. The studio was soundproofed with about 1,500 seagrass mattresses from army barracks, and Irmin Schmidt used a custom-built effects unit, the Alpha 77, with his synthesisers. Holger Czukay and Michael Karoli edited the tapes, and Jaki Liebezeit's drumming anchors the long pieces. Soup was finished a day before the June deadline, without edits. The band Spoon took its name from the track Spoon.
