To create Filth, Swans swapped out traditional rock setups for a factory-like assembly line of sound, using dual drummers, twin bassists hammering blunt chords, and whipping a metal table with an iron bar. The album uses tape loops and raw noise instead of hooks or melodies. It completely avoids choruses, story-driven lyrics and satisfying musical climaxes. Instead, Michael Gira delivers unhinged, barking chants focused on domination and submission, turning the music into a crawling, nerve-shattering experience.
