Primus recorded their studio debut in December 1989 at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco, producing with Matt Winegar. Todd Huth wrote guitar parts that Larry LaLonde played, and Huth left before recording. To Defy the Laws of Tradition opens with a sample of Rush's YYZ taken from a live recording, and the Sathington Willoughby Orchestra credits use toy instruments including a toy organ and piano. Les Claypool later named it his favourite Primus album.
