Julia Holter and Cole M.G.N. produced this, her fourth album, which took far longer than expected and many attempts. Cole pushed her to place her vocals in the foreground, against her habit of hiding them behind the music. It has no unifying narrative, unlike her earlier Loud City Song, and uses saxophone, clarinet, violin, cello and percussion in chamber pop arrangements. She named Scott Walker's Duchess as a key influence, and drew on Colette's novella Chance Acquaintances for Lucette Stranded on the Island.
