Kevin Barnes wrote, produced and performed most of this between January 2005 and March 2006. Elephant Six members including Bryan Poole, Jamey Huggins and Heather McIntosh contribute, and Barnes' wife and daughter also appear. Barnes calls it a concept album about becoming his glam alter ego Georgie Fruit, who takes over the second half. The 11:52 The Past Is a Grotesque Animal is where the transformation happens. Barnes says antidepressants made the record possible by giving him perspective.
