Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, album cover

Kind of Blue

Miles Davis · 1959

Miles Davis recorded this on 2 March and 22 April 1959 at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York, on three-track tape. It is based entirely on modality, moving away from the complex chord changes of hard bop, and each performer received scales rather than chord charts. There was almost no rehearsal. The line-up is Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans (replaced by Wynton Kelly on Freddie Freeloader), Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Richard Wright of Pink Floyd said its chord progressions influenced the introduction to Breathe.
