Sigur Rós recorded this in 2012 and 2013 at Sundlaugin in Iceland and at two studios in California, with Rich Costey mixing. The band describe the sound as more aggressive than their earlier work, and every song is sung in Icelandic, with some reversed words opening Yfirborð. It is their only album released entirely through XL Recordings after leaving EMI and Parlophone, and the last with drummer Orri Páll Dýrason before his 2018 departure.
