Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

Godspeed You! Black Emperor · 2000

• Scores: Noise 3, Unease 3, Complexity 3 (each 1 to 5)
• Genre: Rock, Post-rock
• Mood: cinematic, apocalyptic, slow-building
• Sound: extended songs, orchestral, field recordings

Godspeed You! Black Emperor recorded this over nine days in February 2000 at Chemical Sound Studios in Toronto, produced by Daryl Smith, from pieces they had been playing live. It is a double LP of four pieces of roughly 20 minutes, each split into movements and mostly instrumental. Most build from slow, hazy passages into large swells before fading. Field recordings run through it, including a loudspeaker announcement, a preacher's sermon, an old man talking about Coney Island and a folk song. Efrim Menuck said his film studies shaped it, comparing the combining of passages and recordings to film editing.
