Maxinquaye is Tricky's debut album, recorded mainly in the first half of 1994 at his home studio in Kilburn, with later sessions in Notting Hill. It is built on heavily altered samples, and Mark Saunders joined two samples 30 BPM apart in different keys by pitch-shifting them until they fitted. Tricky kept glitches and crackles in the mix, using dub techniques, and he wrote many of the lyrics from a female perspective for Martina Topley-Bird to sing. It was released on 20 February 1995 and named after his late mother, Maxine Quaye.
