Battles recorded this in 2006 at Machines with Magnets in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, producing it themselves with Keith Souza engineering and mixing. It is the band's first album with prominent vocals and lyrics, after EPs that were almost entirely instrumental. Math rock, experimental rock and avant-prog sit together, with John Stanier's drumming under looped guitars and keyboards from Dave Konopka, Tyondai Braxton and Ian Williams. Track lengths run from the 52-second Prismism to the eight-minute Rainbow.
