Music for Airports

Brian Eno · 1978

Music for Airports is the Brian Eno album that set out ambient music as something to be played continuously in a space such as an airport terminal. He built it in 1978 from tape loops of different lengths layered against each other, using single notes sung by three women recorded at Conny Plank's studio in Cologne, piano from Robert Wyatt and his own synthesiser and electric piano. The loops never line up in the same way, so the pieces keep shifting without any melody to follow. Eno's liner notes say ambient music should "induce calm and a space to think".
