Out to Lunch! is a quintet record with no piano, so Eric Dolphy's bass clarinet, flute and alto saxophone, Freddie Hubbard's trumpet and Bobby Hutcherson's vibraphone carry the harmony. Recorded on 25 February 1964 at Van Gelder Studio, it uses angular themes and an implied pulse instead of a stated beat, with Tony Williams' drums and Richard Davis' bass, including a bowed duet, shifting under the soloists. "Gazzelloni" holds to its construction for 13 bars, then goes free. Dolphy died in June 1964, before it was released, and its zigzag solos can be heard in the playing of Anthony Braxton and Roscoe Mitchell.
