Panopticon by Isis, album cover

Panopticon

Isis · 2004

Isis recorded this in June and July 2004 at Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, producing with Matt Bayles. It is a concept piece about surveillance, titled after Jeremy Bentham's prison design and Michel Foucault's use of it in Discipline and Punish. It was recorded to analogue tape, and about half the master reels went missing afterwards. Writing was collaborative, with no song credited to one person, and drums and vocals sit further back than on Oceanic with more electronics and synths. Justin Chancellor of Tool plays bass on Altered Course.
