Pink Moon by Nick Drake, album cover

Pink Moon

Nick Drake · 1972

Pink Moon is Nick Drake’s third album, and it strips his folk music back to nothing but his voice and acoustic guitar. Drake recorded it with engineer John Wood at Sound Techniques in London over two nights in October 1971, starting around 11 p.m. when the studio was free, with no backing band, unlike his earlier records. The only extra instrument is a single piano melody overdubbed on the title track. Drake had decided beforehand to make the record as plain as possible, and the songs are short, with the whole album running just over 28 minutes. The lyrics are bleak and have often been linked to his struggle with depression, though his label manager disputed that the album was made during a depressive period.
