Steve Albini engineered this debut in January 1990 at the Palladium studio in Edinburgh, keeping to a policy of no more than two takes per song. The band finished in one week of the two booked, and Albini persuaded them to cut back on vocal harmonies, giving Kim Deal's lead more prominence. Arrangements are sparse and the country influence of their earlier demo is gone. It includes a cover of The Beatles' Happiness Is a Warm Gun. Kurt Cobain named it his favourite record, and it led him to choose Albini for Nirvana's In Utero.
