Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds recorded this between December 2011 and August 2012 at La Fabrique, a converted 19th-century mansion in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, with Nick Launay producing. Warren Ellis's loops are central, described by Cave as the album's tiny, trembling heart-beat. It is the first Bad Seeds album without Mick Harvey, and Barry Adamson returns on additional bass. Cave wrote the songs over twelve months in a notebook, drawing on internet curiosities and unusual Wikipedia entries.
