Pygmalion is the album where Slowdive moved from the guitar walls of shoegaze to sparse, near-ambient music. Neil Halstead wrote it, working with looping and reverb and with an interest in electronica and dance music, and some passages leave out conventional percussion entirely. It was recorded at Courtyard in Sutton Courtenay with the producer Chris Hufford, and the cover uses imagery from Rainer Wehinger's graphic notation for Ligeti's Artikulation. Creation Records dropped the band about a week after its release on 6 February 1995, and they split before the end of the year.
