Red by King Crimson, album cover

Red

King Crimson · 1974

Red is the last King Crimson album of the 1970s line-up, built from heavy riffs, overdubbed guitars and keyboards, and material that grew out of live improvisation. "Providence" is edited from an improvisation recorded on 30 June 1974 at the Palace Theater in Providence, Rhode Island, and the rest was recorded in July and August 1974 at Olympic Studios in London. Saxophone, cornet, oboe, violin and cello are added by guests and former members on several tracks. Robert Fripp disbanded the group about two weeks before its release, and Kurt Cobain cited it as an influence on Nirvana's In Utero.
