Black Sabbath wrote this in Los Angeles and at Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean, then recorded it in September 1973 at Morgan Studios in London. Tony Iommi came up with the title track's main riff in the castle's dungeon. The band added synthesisers, strings and keyboards to more complex arrangements, and Rick Wakeman plays piano and Minimoog on Sabbra Cadabra. The orchestra for Spiral Architect would not fit into Morgan, so it recorded at nearby Pye Studio, where Ozzy Osbourne hummed the parts for the musicians.
