Primus recorded their major-label debut in January 1991 at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, producing it themselves. Les Claypool plays a fretless six-string bass with tapping on Jerry Was a Race Car Driver, which samples Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and Eleven is named for its 11/8 time signature. Tom Waits voices the title character on Tommy the Cat. Claypool said the title came from the band's sense of being thrown onto a major label alongside glam metal bands they did not fit with.
