Spiderland pretty much started both the post-rock and math rock genres. It broke rock conventions by using odd time signatures paired with quiet passages and spoken word, creating tension which was released sparingly with perfectly timed loudness. The album abandons classical song structures for minimalist expanded sections paired with silence.
