Opeth recorded this in April and May 1999 at Studio Fredman in Gothenburg, produced by Mikael Åkerfeldt with Fredrik Nordström. It is a concept album, like My Arms, Your Hearse before it, and Åkerfeldt described its theme as anti-Christian rather than Satanic. Progressive death metal and progressive rock sit together across seven long tracks, and the band had time to rehearse only twice before entering the studio. It was Martin Mendez's first Opeth album on bass.
