Sunbather combines black metal screams and blast-driven drumming with the dense, melodic guitar walls of shoegaze. Deafheaven recorded it in January 2013 over six days at Atomic Garden Studios in East Palo Alto, on two-inch tape, with George Clarke's reverb-soaked screams over long songs that drop into slower, melodic sections. Short interludes use sampling, field recordings and drones, including "Windows", which layers a recording of a drug deal over a street preacher in San Francisco. Stéphane "Neige" Paut of Alcest reads a passage from Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being on "Please Remember".
