Superunknown is the Soundgarden album recorded between July and September 1993 at Bad Animals Studio in Seattle, produced by Michael Beinhorn and the band. The guitars were tuned a quarter step down, with unusual tunings on tracks like "Superunknown" and "Head Down", and odd meters run through it: "Fell on Black Days" is in 6/4, "Limo Wreck" in 15/8 and "My Wave" alternates 5/4 and 4/4. Viola and cello appear on "Half". Beinhorn drew on European electronic music such as Aphex Twin to get the intensity he wanted.
