PJ Harvey recorded this in September and October 1994 at Townhouse Studios in London with Flood and John Parish co-producing. Much of it was composed on a second-hand Yamaha keyboard, and its deep organ tones often stand in for a bass line. Most songs use two guitar parts, played by Harvey and Parish, while Down by the Water adds a synthesised organ and orchestral ensemble. The closing track, The Dancer, draws on Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western scores. Harvey has named Captain Beefheart and American blues as major influences.
