Angelo Badalamenti composed all the music, with David Lynch writing the lyrics, and the pair produced it at Excalibur Sound in New York in 1989 and 1990. Mostly instrumental, it blends slow jazz, synthesiser washes and twanging guitar into a dreamlike, uneasy atmosphere. Julee Cruise sings three tracks in a fragile, hushed voice. The theme and Laura Palmer's Theme went on to be widely sampled.
