Young Team
- Zone: Shallows (level 2 of 5)
- Genre: Rock, Post-rock
- Mood: dreamlike, cathartic, majestic
- Sound: glockenspiel and piano, quiet-loud dynamics, extended songs
Young Team is a largely instrumental debut that made quiet-to-loud dynamics the whole point of the music. The core band is just guitar, bass and drums, with occasional glockenspiel, piano and flute, and the pieces are long: “Like Herod” runs 11:41 and “Mogwai Fear Satan” runs over 16 minutes. Several tracks use recorded speech, including a phone conversation on “Tracy” and a backmasked monologue by Barry Burns on “Yes! I Am a Long Way from Home”. The only sung track is “R U Still in 2 It”, with Aidan Moffat on vocals. It was recorded in summer 1997 at MCM Studios in Hamilton, Scotland, after the band had written only three of the songs. It became one of the key Scottish post-rock records.
